The measured mutagenicity emission factors with metabolic 17 activation for new fuel injection, used fuel injection, new carburetor and used carburetor 18 motorcycles are 7.77  10 4 , 1.18  10 5 , 1.32  10 5 and 1.15  10 5 rev/km, respectively. The 19 mutagenicity emission factors with metabolic activation are higher than the corresponding 20 values without metabolic activation. The average PAH emission factors are 12.3, 16.3, 25.5 21 and 26.5 μg/km for new and used fuel-injection motorcycles, and new and used 22 carburetor-operated motorcycles, respectively. The correlation coefficients between PAHs and 23 mutagenicity emission factors are higher with metabolic activation (0.59) than that without 24 metabolic activation (0.31). 25 26

Mutagenicity of soot and associated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons to Salmonella typhimurium.

The mutagenic activity of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocar bon-containing fraction of several soot samples was measured in Salmonella typhimurium, using resistance to the purine analog 8-azaguanine as a genetic marker. A postmitochondrial supernatant derived from livers of phénobarbitaland/or Aroclor-pretreated male Sprague-Dawley rats was incorporated into all assays to allow metabolism of pr...

Chemical and mutagenic patterns of airborne particulate matter collected in 17 Italian towns.

The mutagenicity of airborne particulate matter collected in 17 towns of Italy in 1990 was assessed using the Ames test. The mutagenicity of crude extract correlated with amount of lead, suggesting the direct contribution of gasoline car exhausts. Moreover, the mutagenicity correlated with particulate matter amounts. An inverse correlation with temperature was observed. The crude extracts were ...

Biodegradation of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons by Aerobic Mixed Bacterial Culture Isolated from Hydrocarbon Polluted Soils

In this study, the degradation potential of five polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) by aerobic mixed bacterial cultures was investigated. Microorganisms were isolated from hydrocarbon contaminated soils of Shadegan wetland located in southwest of Iran. The degradation experiments were conducted in liquid cultures. PAH or PAHs concentration was 100 mg/L at the beginning of degradation e...

Single photon infrared emission spectroscopy of the gas phase pyrene cation: support for a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon origin of the unidentified infrared emission bands.

We report the first observation of infrared emission from a gaseous ionic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH), the pyrene cation, over the range of wavelengths spanned by the ubiquitous interstellar unidentified infrared emission bands (UIRs). The complete set of pyrene cation IR emissions is observed, with relative intensities consistent with astrophysical observations, supporting the propos...

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon exposure, urinary mutagenicity, and DNA adducts in rubber manufacturing workers.

OBJECTIVES Several studies have suggested that genotoxic risks might still be present in the contemporary rubber manufacturing industry. Previously, we observed elevated levels of urinary mutagenicity and bladder DNA adducts in rubber workers. Presently, we investigated whether DNA adducts in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) and/or urothelial cells may be caused by polycyclic aromatic ...
